Implant checkups
An implant can't decay, but the gum and bone around it can still get inflamed. Checkups look at the implant, the crown, the gum and your bite.
What happens
A visit about as long as a regular cleaning, at the schedule Dr. Clemons sets for you.
- 01
Step 1: Look and measure
The hygienist checks the gum around the implant and measures how it sits against the post.
- 02
Step 2: Clean
Cleaning uses instruments made for implants, so the surface of the post isn't scratched.
- 03
Step 3: Check the crown and bite
Dr. Clemons checks the crown, the screw and your bite, and takes an X-ray when she needs one.
- 04
Step 4: Plan the next visit
We tell you how often to come back. It depends on your gums.
Comfort, choices and care
Comfort
Cleaning an implant is usually comfortable. Tell us about any tenderness and we adjust. We don't offer sedation in this office.
If you wait or choose differently
Skipping checkups lets plaque and gum inflammation build around an implant without hurting, and it can go on to bone loss. Dr. Clemons says how often you need to be seen and why.
Risks and after-care
Gum inflammation around an implant is treatable early and harder later. Call us for bleeding, swelling, a bad taste, or a crown that feels loose or high.
How it's billed
Each checkup is billed as a single visit. The fee is in your estimate when you schedule, and we give you an itemized receipt.

Questions about implant checkups
How often do I need to come in?
It depends on your gums and how you clean. Dr. Clemons sets a schedule and tells you why.
How do I clean around an implant?
Brush and floss it like a natural tooth, and use the cleaning tools we show you at the visit.
What if the crown feels loose?
Call us. Don't wait for the next checkup, and don't try to tighten it yourself.
